How to Clean Sunglasses

When cleaning sunglasses, the fundamental rule is to rinse before wiping, rather than wiping them while dry. Lens surfaces often accumulate dust, fine particles, or oily residue; wiping directly with a cloth can cause these particles to act like sandpaper, leaving microscopic scratches. Therefore, the safer approach is to gently rinse the glasses under running water to remove surface impurities before proceeding with further cleaning. Ideally, use a neutral cleaning method: a small amount of neutral dish soap can be used to gently wash the lenses and the areas where they connect to the frames-removing oils and sweat-followed by a thorough rinse with clean water. When drying, use a soft microfiber cloth and wipe gently in a single direction, avoiding vigorous back-and-forth rubbing. For stubborn stains, repeat the washing process rather than resorting to alcohol, paper towels, or the hem of a garment, as these can damage the lens coating.

Proper storage after cleaning is equally important. Once the lenses are completely dry, place the sunglasses immediately into their case to prevent dust accumulation or accidental scratches. It is also advisable to clean the cleaning cloth itself regularly; if the cloth accumulates oil and dust, it will compromise cleaning effectiveness during future use. Maintaining proper cleaning habits not only ensures clear vision but also extends the overall lifespan of your sunglasses.
